On the Courage of LGBTQ+ Weddings

There are often extra nerves bundled into the LGBTQ+ wedding package. Sometimes it is because not everyone in the family made it on the guest list—by choice or by silence. Sometimes it is because the couple had to explain, defend, or wait longer than they ever should have had to. And sometimes it is simply because showing up as yourself, publicly and unapologetically, still takes courage.
I photograph LGBTQ+ weddings throughout the San Francisco Bay Area—from quiet coastal ceremonies in Carmel-by-the- Sea to candlelit city vows in San Francisco and wine country—and what I see most often is not struggle, but concentrated intention. These couples have thought carefully about why they are here, whom they want beside them, and what the moment actually means. The joy runs deeper for it.
And, yes—
there is usually better dancing. : )
