A Family Portrait Over the Years- a Journey Through San Francisco

Updated: Jan 6

A Long-Lasting Connection

Some families arrive in your life for a season; others stay for decades. This one has been part of my San Francisco family photography journey for nearly twenty years. Watching their kids grow from little ones into young adults — one now off to college — has been one of the great joys of my work. Their annual portrait session has become a cherished tradition. It ties together years of laughter, change, and wonderful stories.

There are families you photograph once, and there are families who become part of your creative life. This crew is firmly, joyfully, the latter. I’ve been photographing them for nearly twenty years, capturing every chapter together, one session at a time.

Exploring San Francisco Together

Over the years, we have wandered through almost every corner of San Francisco, enjoying fog-kissed mornings at Crissy Field, moody afternoons along Land’s End, and bright sessions in Golden Gate Park looking for new and wonderful . We even took a windswept ferry ride out to Alcatraz. Each year, their mom transforms these moments into beautiful holiday cards. These cards are small works of art that tell the story of their family as it evolves.

Their kids have always been game for anything. They climb, explore, and laugh through cold wind or bright sun. They still show up with that same generous, easy spirit that makes every session feel like an adventure. In a sweet twist of life’s coincidences, their son and mine share the same name. This connection has always felt like a tiny bond between our families.

The Joy of Family Photography

At this point, photographing them feels less like work and more like spending time with old friends. There’s comfort, trust, and a shared history behind every frame. These sessions remind me of what I love most about family photography: the long arc of connection and the privilege of witnessing people grow, change, and come home to themselves again and again.

Why Invest in Family Photography?

Family photography is more than just taking pictures. It is about capturing the essence of your family. It is about freezing those fleeting moments in time. Each photograph tells a story, reflecting the love and connection shared among family members. Whether it’s a candid laugh, a gentle touch, or a shared glance, these moments are precious.

When you choose to document your family’s journey, you create a legacy. These images will be cherished for generations. They will serve as a reminder of the love that binds you together. You’ll look back on these photos and remember the joy, the laughter, and the love that filled those moments.

Preparing for Your Family Portrait Session (in San Francisco and Elsewhere)

Preparation is key to a successful family photography session. Here are a few tips to help you get ready:

  1. Choose the Right Location: Think about where your family feels most comfortable. It could be a park, your home, or a favorite spot in the city. The location should reflect your family's personality.

  2. Dress Comfortably: Wear outfits that make you feel good. Choose colors that complement each other but avoid overly busy patterns. Comfort is essential, especially for kids.

  3. Be Yourself: The best photos come from genuine moments. Don’t worry about posing perfectly. Instead, focus on enjoying the time together. Laugh, play, and interact naturally.

  4. Plan for the Weather: San Francisco weather can be unpredictable. Check the forecast and be prepared for changes. Bring layers if needed, and don’t let a little rain dampen your spirits!

Enjoy the Experience of Family Portrait Sessions

Family photography sessions are not just about the final images. They are about the experience. It’s a time to connect, laugh, and create memories together. I strive to make each session enjoyable and relaxed. I want you to feel at ease, allowing your true selves to shine through.

As we capture these moments, I encourage you to engage with each other. Share stories, jokes, and laughter. This interaction will create authentic moments that translate beautifully into photographs.
