A Surprise Proposal at Presidio Tunnel Tops

There are plenty of ways to pull off a surprise proposal in San Francisco without making someone suspicious. Sankar had a particularly good one: friends were visiting from out of town, and everyone was getting together for dinner. Before dinner, he and his girlfriend took a walk through Presidio Tunnel Tops, stopping at a quiet spot with the Golden Gate Bridge behind them. I was already there, keeping my distance and waiting for them to arrive.

They had barely settled into the view before Sankar dropped to one knee.


She said yes!


There were hugs, a kiss, a new ring to admire and a few minutes for the two of them to take in what had just happened. Then came the second surprise.

As they made their way farther into Tunnel Tops, their friends came running toward them. The reaction was almost as much fun as the proposal itself , arms waving, giggles, smiles and everyone piling together for hugs and congratulations.


Afterward, we spent a little time in the park for photographs. The fog had softened the view of the Golden Gate Bridge, and instead of trying to manufacture a big photo session out of the afternoon, we kept things easy. A few portraits, a little ring admiration, some laughing, and then I left them to go celebrate with their friends.


Sometimes the best proposal plans are the ones that leave plenty of room for what happens afterward.
